Dr Karthik Chandra Vallam MBBS (JIPMER), MS (Madras Medical College), M.Ch (Tata Memorial Hospital) is a Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon at Medicover Hospital, Visakhapatnam.


Having been trained at TMH, Mumbai which is one of the most premier institutions for cancer treatment and training in India, he is a specialist in surgical treatment of various solid organ cancers. Following his M.Ch, he has pursued a specialised residency in gastro-intestinal and pediatric onco-surgery at TMH. He is also the recipient of travel scholarships from ESMO (European Society of Surgical Oncology) and British Society of Gastroenterology for his award winning paper presentations. He has won best paper awards at IASO and ACOS conferences.


He has received his Robotic Surgery training at TMH, Mumbai, Keck medical centre, Los Angeles and Intuitive Surgicals, Sunnyavale. He has undergone an ESSO (European Society of Surgical Oncology) advanced training course on Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC at Hamburg.


He has been an invited faculty at various international, national and state conferences and has delivered various lectures and surgical video demonstrations in these forums. He has also performed live robotic surgery demonstration (of endometrial cancer surgery) at aFOGSI associated conference in Visakhapatnam. He was the organising secretary for two cancer conferences . Robotic kidney sparing surgery for highly complex kidney tumor by Dr Karthik Chandra

In this day and age, partial nephrectomy or nephron sparing surgery is the choice of treatment for small and medium sized tumours of the kidney. In young patients or patients with renal function compromise , it is better to avoid total nephrectomy to avoid the long term complications of having a single kidney (cardiovascular and renal). However, some complex tumors are difficult to remove because of their location in the kidney. Robotic surgery helps in resection of such tumors with ease. Here, we discuss one such case.

Breast Cancers



  • A cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. Breast cancer can occur in women and rarely in men. Symptoms of breast cancer include a lump in the breast, bloody discharge from the nipple and changes in the shape or texture of the nipple or breast. Its treatment depends on the stage of cancer. It may consist of chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy and surgery.
  • Breast Cancer Surgery: This surgery is also called a lumpectomy, quadrantectomy, partial mastectomy, or segmental mastectomy. Mastectomy is a surgery in which the entire breast is removed, including all of the breast tissue and sometimes other nearby tissues. There are several different types of mastectomies.


Gastrointestinal Cancers



  • Gastrointestinal cancer is cancer that develops along the GI tract (also called the digestive tract). The GI tract starts at the esophagus (the tube that takes food from the mouth to the stomach) and ends at the anus (where waste exits the body). Primary GI cancer starts growing in the GI tract.
  • Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery: Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer surgery offers the chance for a cure to many people. But these procedures are often complex, requiring the skilled hands of experienced gastrointestinal cancer surgeons. Surgery can also be combined with other GI cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, to improve outcomes.


Breast Conservation & Oncoplastic Surgeries



  • Oncoplastic breast conserving surgery (BCS) involves maintaining aesthetically natural breast contour while performing the radical resection of the tumor in patients with breast cancer.
  • Nuances of oncoplastic breast surgery: OBS can be broadly divided into breast cancer surgery using local parenchymal flaps, mammoplasty techniques or local/remote flaps, and breast reconstruction after mastectomy using internal implants/prosthesis or autologous tissue aided with surgical accessories.


Sentinel Node Biopsy



  • A sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a procedure in which the sentinel lymph node is identified, removed, and examined to determine whether cancer cells are present. It is used in people who have already been diagnosed with cancer.


Lung and Medistinal Cancers



  • Mediastinal tumors are growths that form in the area of the chest that separates the lungs. This area, called the mediastinum, is surrounded by the breastbone in front, the spine in back, and the lungs on each side. The mediastinum contains the heart, aorta, esophagus, thymus, trachea, lymph nodes and nerves.


Urological Cancers



  • Urologic cancers affect the organs and structures of the male and female urinary system and the male reproductive system.
  • Urological Cancer Surgery: Surgery often is the primary treatment for many urologic cancers. The type of surgery may depend on the type of cancer and its stage. If a urologic cancer has metastasized, treatment may also include chemotherapy, radiation therapy targeted therapy or immunotherapy


Gynaecological Cancers



The five main types of gynecologic cancer are: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar. (A sixth type of gynecologic cancer is the very rare fallopian tube cancer.) Of all the gynecologic cancers, only cervical cancer has screening tests that can find this cancer early, when treatment can be most effective.Types of Surgery for Gynecologic Cancers: Removal of the uterus, including the cervix. Removal of the uterus, cervix, and part of the vagina the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or nearby lymph nodes may also be removed. Removal of one ovary and one fallopian tube. Removal of both ovaries and both fallopian tubes.


Head and Neck Cancers



  • Head and neck cancers include cancers in the larynx, throat, lips, mouth, nose, and salivary glands. Tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, and infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) increase the risk of head and neck cancers.
  • Head and neck cancer Surgery: Surgeon makes an incision in front of your ear and down your neck, and removes the tumor, surrounding tissue, and sometimes nearby lymph nodes. When other salivary glands are involved, surgery is the most common treatment. The approach depends on the type and location of the tumor.


Limb Salvage Surgery



  • Limb-salvage surgery is a surgical option for children with a malignant tumor in a long bone of their leg or arm. Limb-salvage surgery helps preserve the limb by removing the part of the bone involved with the tumor and some of the tissues that surround it.
